The Karoo Experience – A unique fresh approach to exploring nature, hidden night-time secrets and creating photography with imagination. If you are an outdoors person, twitcher (birder) or photographer, you will find this special trip one you cannot pass up. I have found that you need to keep finding new avenues to keep your skills fresh if you don’t often get out in the areas you want to photograph and enjoy.
I have recently partnered with the a Karoo Nature Reserve on an exclusive basis to offer fun and enjoyable, birding, landscape and wildlife/animal photography opportunities. We will be limiting these weekends to only 4 or 6 guests on the activities vs the 10 that are loaded on the general bookings.
For the 4 days, we will be on an 8000 ha piece of magic in the central Karoo near Hanover in the Northern Cape. Part of the property is an actual working sheep farm with the rest having been designated as a private nature reserve. Our host will be P.C , a third generation to reside on this beautiful piece of Karoo land. He is a passionate man with a true desire to work closely with conserving nature and being a sustainable karoo farmer. His passion shines through when he shares all of the secrets during the nature drives and walks we will enjoy.
The accommodations will be in the Homestead which is an original Karoo farmhouse built-in 1933. The style has remained the same with a few modern touches including air-conditioning (heat & cool) has been added. You will be transported back in time and enjoy the true Karoo living of old in comfort. We will enjoy traditional Karoo meals with a modern flair and special touch from the Reserves private Chef. Along with this P.C has stocked a wine cellar and has a small selection of beverages one can enjoy. For those that require a special something, you are encouraged to bring that with you.
The main highlight of the area is the abundance of birds, landscapes and of course the nocturnal animals that are very special. Birding is great all year round with the spring and summer months being the top months for the more elusive visitors. Landscape photography in the wide-open spaces is also great but the highlight is the Astro Nocturnal landscape opportunities due to the lack of light pollution. Photographers of all levels can achieve beautiful results.
One of the reasons many nature lovers are drawn to this area is the possibility to see one of the shy 5 animals that are prevalent on the private nature reserve. They are the Aardvark, Aardwolf, Black-footed cat, Porcupine and the Bat-eared fox. Not easy to photograph but incredible to see.
