Chobe and Kalizo
Join me for a special journey to the waterways of Chobe and Zambezi Mabula lodge. We will be visiting in November 2018 to #createandexplore all things photographic that the Chobe and Zambezi region has to offer. I guarantee you will become a more creative and inspired photographer after this adventure.
BOOKING OPEN – 2018
I will have a departure November 2018 ex Kasane. We will be spending three nights in the Chobe on the Pangolin Voyager houseboat with a road transfer to and from Zambezi Mabula lodge. We will be staying on the banks of the magical Zambezi river at the BRAND New Zambezi Mabula Lodge. This adds an additional option for diversity in the photography no other group can experience during the season with me. NO other operator or Lodge has this unprecedented access to the colony.
This is a snippet of what we got up to in November 2016
The Voyager is spread over three levels.
The lower level the houseboat has five well-appointed en-suite cabins with double or twin beds available depending on the required configuration. The beds are fitted with the finest linen and specialist mattresses. The cabins have built-in cupboards, an air conditioner and the windows are fitted with a mosquito net to allow the gentle breeze from the river and the nighttime sounds of the Chobe National Park to permeate the rooms.
The middle level is occupied by the lounge and dining area along with a deck at the rear which accommodates the Braai (barbeque). The comfortable lounge area is stocked with reference books and binoculars which are yours to use as we drift between our private mooring points. Meals are served at the large dining table and the menu varies depending on what ingredients can be locally sourced throughout the seasons. There is a comprehensive selection of alcoholic and soft drinks for you to enjoy throughout the day from the bar.
The upper level hosts a viewing deck equipped with chairs, sun loungers and a table perfect for topping up those tans in between activities and for witnessing the majestic African sunsets that grace us every evening.
We will be staying in the Luxury tents and/or Chalets. Each en-suite unit has mosquito nets, plug points, linen, fridge, kettle, and fans. Kalizo Lodge has a restaurant, swimming pool and leisure area with deck chairs. We will be the first photographic group to visit the brand new, renovated and rebranded lodges which are now part of the Gondwana Collection, the Zambezi Mabula Lodge
The Chobe River Wildlife Adventure:
Arguably one of the best wildlife destinations in Southern Africa where we spend the next 3 days. For this leg of the tour, we use professionally dedicated photo boats with custom designed and built swivel chairs with support arms and gimbal heads to offer you, the photographer the best possible platform to photograph both animals and birds. The Chobe area is home to the highest concentration of elephants in the world, and seeing these majestic animals from a low level on the private photo boat platform as they come down to the water to drink, bath and play, is something that will be ingrained in your memory for good.
Photo opportunities also include those of Buffalo, Lechwe, Sable, Crocodile, Hippo, Puku and much more. Predators include sightings of lion and leopard. The abundant birdlife is amazing with good sightings of African Fish Eagles, African Skimmers, Kingfishers, Bee-Eaters, Herons, Storks and much more. I will pass on much information and techniques that I have built up over the many visits in these areas.
The Carmine Bee-Eaters Breeding Colonies:
From early September every year, the banks of the incredible Zambezi River on Namibia’s Caprivi strip is transformed into a hive of activity, with vivid, vibrant crimson, scarlet, and blue colours flashing through the sky, creating some of the most beautiful visual imaginable in nature. The cause of this breathtaking colour explosion is the arrival of the beautiful Carmine Bee-Eaters from central Africa. They make this long journey south through Africa to their favored breeding grounds along the banks of the Zambezi River. This spectacle is truly incredible when more than 8 000 birds inhabit a single colony. The best time to view this amazing spectacle is during the morning and evening hours.
As the insects they feed on are most active at dawn and dusk, the birds can be seen at their most active during these hours. Your photographic opportunities are endless and will include birds in flight, landing, feeding, territorial displays to name a few. Also, various raptors such as Yellow-Billed Kites feed on the Carmines in high angled attacks. Much of the bee-eater photography is done from land. However, we will have access to a boat at Kalizo and adds a new dimension to our birding and photo opportunities with some outings on the Zambezi River. A wide variety of bird species and we could encounter and photograph African skimmers, fish eagles, kingfishers, storks and Ibis to name a few.
Between the morning and afternoon activities at Chobe and Zambezi Mabula Lodge, we will be able to evaluate your work, process images and even enjoy some creative thinking about your photographic passion. I am well versed in Lightroom and for al Canon shooters , a select professional Canon South Africa trainer in various avenues including the DPP Software you received free of charge with your camera.
